The La Costa Canyon girls volleyball team has been one of the most successful San Diego Section high school programs for the past nine years. The Mavericks have won a San Diego Section title for nine years in a row! The team has been ranked in the top 100 in the United States for the past seven years. Our best year was 2008, when we were ranked #1 in the nation and won the California Division I State Championship. In 2011, we finished second in the California State Division II Championships. In 2012, we finished second in the Southern California Division II Regionals.
La Costa Canyon girls volleyball has produced numerous college players. Many of our alumni are currently playing in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA, and the Olympics.
In 2008, Katie Fuller (USC) was selected on the AVCA First Team All America. In 2009, Natalie Hagglund (USC) and Kendall Polan (Yale) were selected to the AVCA First and Second Team All America, respectively. In 2013, Brittany Abercrombie (USC) was selected to the AVCA First Team All America. In 2016, Karsta Lowe (2010) and Natalie Hagglund (2009) were members of Team USA, with Lowe a valuable player in the Rio de Janiero Olympics.
The Mavericks field three teams each year (Freshman, Junior Varsity, Varsity) with 12-14 players per team. We compete in the Avocado-West League of the CIF San Diego Section. The Varsity team plays in three top high school tournaments each season:
Durango Classic (Las Vegas)
California Challenge (San Diego)
Southern California Invitational (San Diego)
The competition from the San Diego Section and the State playoffs, plus the highly rated tournaments, keep the Mavericks in the national spotlight.
For the 2011-12 season, La Costa Canyon High School was honored as the Division II athletic program of the year, and the Mavericks were among the top three finalists for the overall state title, by Cal-Hi Sports.
